Still Recovering From Hurricane Lala, Hawaii Prepares for a Possible Weekend Cyclone
Forecasters said up to 15 inches of rain could hit the Big Island as 13,200 customers remained without power after Hurricane Lala.
On Thursday, the National Weather Service's Central Pacific Hurricane Center warned that a tropical cyclone could strike Hawaii this weekend, threatening the Big Island just days after Hurricane Lala caused widespread damage.
Lala's passage last weekend left nearly 15,000 homes and businesses without electricity while causing significant infrastructure damage, including washed-out roads and flooded homes across the Big Island.
About 13,200 customers remain without power Thursday, with Hawaiian Electric reporting that repairs in heavily damaged areas could take at least two weeks as the state manages two hurricane-related deaths.
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green scheduled a news conference for Thursday afternoon to address both the approaching storm threat and ongoing recovery efforts following Lala's destruction.
Forecasters expect the system to pass near or south of the Big Island this weekend, potentially dumping up to 15 inches of rain and triggering life-threatening flooding and mudslides.
