Halloween spending to reach record $13.5 billion nationwide
Consumers are expected to spend an average of $115 each, with half starting purchases in September or earlier, the National Retail Federation said.
The National Retail Federation projects Halloween spending will hit a record $13.5 billion this year, with consumers averaging $115 per person on costumes, decorations, and candy.
Americans are spending roughly $35 more per person than in 2019, driven by increased participation; the NRF attributes the surge to more shoppers celebrating the holiday this year.
In SOUTH BEND, Ind., families are managing costs through second-hand options at Unity Gardens and the store Once in Mishawaka, where Unity Gardens Executive Director Sarah Stewart encourages community costume swaps.
"Affordability is top of mind, and we see a lot of shoppers going to discount stores," said Allison Zeller, Vice President of Industry and Consumer Insights for the NRF, noting shoppers are spreading purchases across multiple channels.
Zeller recommends shoppers reuse decor items and focus on high-impact areas to save, while major retailers like Amazon, Target, and Walmart are offering sales this week for Halloween purchases.
