Halifax police sign on to federal assault-style gun buyback program

Halifax police will participate in the federally funded buyback program to collect about 200 prohibited firearms despite opposition from Nova Scotia's provincial government.

  • On Feb. 3, 2026, Halifax Regional Police signed an agreement with the federal government of Canada to participate in the buyback program, despite the province's opposition, MacLean said.
  • Since 2020, Ottawa has banned some 2,500 makes and models of `assault-style` firearms, and gun owners must register by the end of March or face license loss or criminal liability by October 30, 2026.
  • Operationally, Halifax will use rotating off-duty officers paid by the federal government, enable gun owners to register firearms via an online portal, and Halifax RCMP will receive federal resources though roles remain unclear.
  • Premier Tim Houston said no provincial policing resources will support the buyback, and he and critics cited the Cape Breton Regional Municipality pilot that collected 25 guns as ineffective.
  • Nationally, participation is uneven: officials hoped Halifax would collect 200 firearms while the RCMP, Quebec provincial police, Cape Breton, Halifax and Winnipeg police services agreed to join; Newfoundland and Labrador, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Ontario Provincial Police declined.
