Halifax banking app starts closing today as millions told to switch to Lloyds

Customers are being moved to the Lloyds app, and Halifax says account numbers, sort codes and payments will stay the same.

  • On Monday, October 5, the Halifax banking app began closing as part of Lloyds Banking Group's plan to retire the Halifax brand and consolidate operations under the Lloyds name.
  • Lloyds Banking Group confirmed earlier this year it would retire the Halifax brand, which originated in 1853 as the Halifax Permanent Benefit Building and Investment Society in Yorkshire before becoming one of Britain's largest building societies.
  • Halifax says customers will find the Lloyds app familiar and retain access to existing accounts and payments. The bank said: "In just a few easy steps, you'll be up and running, with everything you need ready for you- your accounts, payments you've set up, and any letters and statements we've sent to your digital inbox."
  • Account numbers and sort codes remain unchanged, meaning customers need not update payment details with employers or pension providers. Lloyds Banking Group insisted there are no job cuts announced as part of the transition.
  • The Halifax app service officially shuts down on October 31, while physical branches will be rebranded as Lloyds locations or consolidated with nearby branches during 2027 to complete the brand integration.
