Half of adults track their health with wearable tech but many don't understand it
A study of 2,000 adults found 57% use wearable tech, but 23% do not understand the data and 24% have ignored device alerts.
A study of 2,000 adults found 57% now use wearable technology to monitor health, yet many struggle to interpret the data. When confused, 61% search online for clarity while 30% simply ignore it.
Data confusion causes 24% of users to ignore health alerts entirely, with heart rate , activity levels , and stress warnings most commonly overlooked. Additionally, 23% admit they do not know what most information means.
Neil Srinivasan, consultant cardiologist at Cromwell Hospital, warned that ignoring signals could mask serious health issues. "Worryingly, this lack of understanding is causing some to ignore alerts and signals which could indicate a serious health issue," Srinivasan said.
Research by OnePoll found 28% of users sought medical advice after receiving an alert. While 58% of those who checked discovered only minor issues, 26% admitted misunderstanding their data caused unnecessary worry.
Starting September 1, 2026, Bupa will launch a genomics prevention-focused pathway for cardiovascular disease using DNA insights to identify risk. This tool will complement wearable data, helping people proactively manage health before symptoms develop.
