Haiti Extradites Suspects in 2021 President's Assassination
Haiti surrendered the suspects after years of delays, and U.S. prosecutors say 30 people have now been indicted in the assassination case.
- On Sunday, a military plane transported 18 suspects involved in the July 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse from Haiti to the United States, according to U.S. District Attorney for the Southern District Jason Reding Quiñones.
- The president was killed at his Port-au-Prince home in July 2021, creating a political vacuum that prompted multiple investigations. Quiñones noted that 30 people have now been indicted in connection to the crime.
- In May, a Florida jury convicted four men for plotting to hire mercenaries to kill the president. Those recently convicted include Arcángel Pretel Ortiz, Antonio Intriago, Walter Veintemilla, and James Solages, all of whom pleaded not guilty.
- Pierre Espérance, executive director of the National Human Rights Defense Network, criticized the transfer as a "disgrace for the Haitian justice system" and called for judicial reforms allowing complex cases to be tried in Haiti.
- "Today marks the next major phase in our pursuit of accountability for the assassination," Quiñones said, while FBI Special Agent in Charge Brett Skiles affirmed investigators remain committed to holding all responsible parties accountable.
