Nursery hackers apologise and claim to have deleted child data

Hackers demanded about £100,000 ransom in Bitcoin after stealing data of 8,000 children from Kido Schools before deleting it and apologizing, experts remain skeptical.

  • Joe Tidy, Cyber Correspondent, BBC World Service reported hackers removed darknet posts and say they deleted stolen files including private details of around 8,000 children and apologised.
  • Last Thursday, attackers began posting profiles after buying access to one Kido Schools staff computer from an initial access broker, which Radiant then used to infiltrate the systems.
  • Most of the material came from Kido Schools' Famly account; Famly told the BBC it was not compromised.
  • Parents and carers received threatening phone calls using stolen contact details, while Kido Schools have not paid ransom and cyber-security experts warn deletion claims are often false.
  • The perpetrators remain unidentified and appear inexperienced, as unknown hackers reportedly deleted stolen data in a move experts say reflects pragmatism more than morality, Jen Ellis noted.
