No New H1N1 Strain, Say ICMR Sources Amid Swine Flu Surge in Delhi, Other Parts of India
Delhi has recorded over 1,777 H1N1 cases this year, while ICMR said the circulating virus matches existing vaccine strains and no new strain was found.
On Sunday, the Indian Council of Medical Research reported no new H1N1 strain has been identified, ruling out panic amid rising swine flu cases in Delhi and across the country.
Circulating viruses belong to the A/Missouri/11/2025 pdm09-like virus strain, specifically clade 6B.1A.5a2a, subclade D.3.1.1, and have been in circulation since 2025.
Delhi recorded over 2,300 Influenza-A cases this year, including over 1,777 H1N1 cases through Friday; the Delhi government issued a health advisory on Saturday urging respiratory hygiene and timely medical consultation.
Union Health Minister J P Nadda reviewed national H1N1 preparedness on Friday, including surveillance and healthcare facility readiness, with Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh attending to assess Delhi's capacity.
While seasonal influenza is mostly self-limiting, elderly persons, young children, and those with underlying conditions face higher complications; current strains are well-matched with vaccine recommendations for the Northern Hemisphere.
The number of swine flu cases in the country is steadily increasing. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has clarified that no new H1N1 strain has been found. The current virus is compatible with the flu vaccine.
