Guardsman wounded in shooting can now breathe on his own as doctors hail ‘miraculous’ recovery
Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, critically wounded in a targeted ambush, shows extraordinary progress and moves to inpatient rehab after emergency brain surgery, medical team and family said.
- MedStar's medical team said Friday that Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe is breathing on his own, can stand with assistance, and has made extraordinary progress in 16 days at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
- On Nov. 26, Wolfe and Specialist Sarah Beckstrom were shot while on patrol near Farragut Square, and fellow guardsmen subdued the shooter after the ambush killed Beckstrom the next day.
- Airlifted within minutes, Wolfe received emergency neurosurgery, Mai said; the medical team called his recovery "extraordinary progress" within 16 days and said it gives us every reason to feel hopeful.
- The shooting prompted national attention from federal and state leaders and earlier reporting confusion about Wolfe's status, with Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29-year-old Afghan national, charged with murder and having pleaded not guilty.
- Wolfe's parents, Melody and Jason Wolfe, asked for continued prayers, praised medical staff for his "miraculous" progress, and hope he returns to work with the West Virginia National Guard after long rehab.
