Kelowna Urged to Disclose Bids in Prospera Place Management Deal
GSL says its bid would have returned 97% of arena profits to Prospera Place and wants the city to disclose bid scores before residents vote.
- The Vancouver-based GSL Group is calling on the City of Kelowna to release all commercial bids for Prospera Place's management contract before the Oct 17 municipal election.
- Last October, the City announced it would not renew the 30-year contract with GSL, opting instead for a deal with the American-based Oak View Group to manage the 6,500-seat arena beginning in 2029.
- CEO Graham Lee stated the company offered to return at least 97 per cent of profits to the venue for a $75,000 fee, arguing that awarding the contract to OVG ignores "Buy Canadian" practices.
- City officials previously suggested GSL failed to modernize the facility, a contention GSL Group disputes, while residents have not been told why the City chose a firm directed by executives based in the United States.
- Since 1999, GSL has contributed more than 70 per cent of original capital and re-invested close to $17 million, serving the community for more than 25 years, according to the company.
