Green-to-Liberal floor crosser running for mayor of New Brunswick capital
Atwin says she will lean on federal experience to tackle homelessness and boost business while facing two first-time rivals in the mayor’s race.
Former Green Party MP Jenica Atwin is running to become mayor of Fredericton, New Brunswick, in the May 11 election against two other first-time mayoral candidates, including longtime city councillor Steve Hicks and retired construction worker John Reid.
Atwin made history seven years ago as the first Green Party MP in Atlantic Canada before later joining the Liberal Party, deciding to pursue municipal office after opting not to run for re-election in the 2025 federal contest.
Hicks, a probation officer, identified homelessness, addiction, and mental health services as his top priorities, stating "by far" these issues need better coordination between police and non-profits to address root causes.
Outgoing Mayor Kate Rogers, who served 14 years on council, oversaw construction of a $111 million performing arts centre; Hicks questioned the project, arguing the city should prioritize citizen needs over such expenditures during financial hardship.
Fredericton voters will elect their next council on May 11, guaranteeing a rookie mayor; Atwin stated the winner must "leverage those relationships" with provincial and federal governments to "make these visions come to life.
