Greece to guarantee safe sailing of Gaza flotilla in its waters, minister says
- On Thursday, Greece's foreign minister stated that the country will ensure the security of vessels presently located in its maritime zone that are participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla en route to Gaza.
- The flotilla, made up of approximately 50 civilian boats, is attempting to challenge Israel’s naval restrictions on Gaza, prompting Israel to repeatedly condemn the activists by alleging their cooperation with Hamas.
- Greece’s foreign minister, Giorgos Gerapetritis, stated that the government currently has no plans to participate alongside the Italian and Spanish naval vessels and minimized the significance of the recent drone attack near the island of Gavdos.
- He stated, “At the moment, it seems that it is safe, but we are on full alert about it,” and confirmed a full inquiry will determine what happened after 12 drones attacked vessels about 30 nautical miles off Gavdos.
- Greece’s guarantee aims to ensure safe passage for the boats, including some with Greek citizens, as Athens has informed Israel and plans to oversee the situation closely.
