Great American Think-Off finalist denied entry to US for debate event
Julie Iverson of Minneapolis was invited after Solape Adetutu Adeyemi was denied entry under U.S. travel restrictions affecting 39 countries, organizers said.
Writer from Nigeria, Solape Adetutu Adeyemi, has been denied entry into the United States, forcing her withdrawal from the 33rd Annual Great American Think-Off scheduled for Saturday, June 13, in New York Mills.
Federal travel restrictions established by the Trump administration in January mandate full or partial visa suspensions for 39 countries, including Nigeria, blocking Adeyemi's participation.
Betsy Roder, executive director of the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center, said Adeyemi's request was denied twice, stating, "We are deeply disappointed that Solape will not be able to join us."
To fill the vacancy, the committee invited Minneapolis ideator Julie Iverson to participate as an alternate, and she accepted the invitation for the weekend debate in New York Mills.
The Think-Off, a philosophy contest, will feature finalists defending their views on the question, "Has the pursuit of happiness made Americans unhappy?" before a live audience on Saturday.
