Grain, oil exports fuel record cargo volumes at Port of Vancouver
Bulk grain and crude oil shipments drove the increase as freight volumes rose 3% and auto traffic climbed 10%, the port authority said.
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority reported record cargo volumes for the first half of 2026, with total freight volumes at the Port of Vancouver rising 3 per cent year-over-year.
Bulk grain exports jumped 14 per cent to a record 17.4 million tonnes, while crude oil exports rose 3 per cent to 12 million tonnes. Auto volumes increased 10 per cent year-over-year.
Commodity shipments were largely bound for the Indo-Pacific, with Alberta crude and canola seed reaching markets in China, Europe, and Mexico as shippers seek alternatives to the protectionist United States market.
Port authority CEO Peter Xotta aims to double exports to non-U.S. markets within a decade, with America now accounting for only one-fifth of crude exports through Vancouver terminals versus one-third the year before.
On July 16, crews unloaded containers from the Yang Ming Throne vessel at Deltaport, located at Roberts Bank in Delta, serving as a critical hub for the port's expansion into diverse international trade lanes.
