Graham Platner suspends Maine Senate campaign after sex assault claim
Party leaders face a short deadline to replace the nominee as Platner’s exit leaves Democrats scrambling to keep their Senate hopes alive.
On Wednesday, Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for U.S. senator in Maine, suspended his campaign after losing support from virtually every Democrat who had backed him following sexual abuse allegations.
Maine resident Jenny Racicot, who dated Platner around 2021, alleged he raped her, prompting Sen. Bernie Sanders and other officials to retract their support for his candidacy.
In a video statement, Platner denied the allegations, calling his decision "incredibly difficult" and not an "admission of guilt," while blaming a "political system not built for normal people."
Facing a July 27 deadline, Maine Democrats must select a new nominee, with contenders including former state senator Troy Jackson, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, and Maine Beer Company owner Dan Kleban.
Democrats view the race as vital for regaining Senate control, considering incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins a beatable opponent in the general election.
The Democrats in Maine have to drop their candidate for the Senate in Washington because of rape charges, which will diminish the chances of reclaiming the Chamber in the fall.
