Governors Pledge to Oppose Federal Overreach — Even when Their Party Runs Washington
The National Governors Association said states should use public criticism, legal challenges and funding decisions to defend sovereignty against federal action.
Earlier this month, the National Governors Association updated its internal federalism principles for the first time in over a decade to protect state sovereignty against federal overreach from Washington.
The policy specifically addresses National Guard deployment following President Donald Trump's actions last year to send troops into Democratic-leaning cities, which sparked major concerns about state sovereignty.
Under the new guidelines, the President should seek consent from Governors before deploying the National Guard, while states may decline to use resources enforcing federal laws.
Vermont Republican Gov. Phil Scott and North Carolina Democratic Gov. Josh Stein led the effort, emphasizing that governors must protect the Constitution's balance of power regardless of party control.
Governors plan to remain vigilant about power sharing between Washington and the states, ensuring locally driven solutions across the 50 states rather than aggregating power in one body.
