Texas Education Board Exploring 3-Year College Degree Programs
The plan could cut degree costs and help students enter high-demand jobs a year earlier, state officials said.
- Governor Greg Abbott directed the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board on Wednesday to develop a statewide framework for three-year bachelor's degree pathways in selected fields to reduce costs and accelerate career entry.
- Abbott stated that "every semester adds tuition, fees, housing, food, transportation, and other living expenses and delays students' ability to begin their careers." He previously mandated a tuition freeze for public colleges and universities since 2023-24.
- Texas Higher Education Commissioner Wynn Rosser said such programs could help motivated students enter high-demand fields a year earlier. Three-year degrees would require about 90 hours of classes instead of 120 to earn a degree.
- By Dec. 31, 2026, Coordinating Board officials will have administrators, faculty leaders, and stakeholders submit recommendations. The group will consider academic standards, employer workforce needs, and regulatory changes necessary for implementation.
- Governor Abbott plans to work with state lawmakers next year to codify the three-year program following the recommendations submission. This effort aims to provide Texas students with efficient pathways into high-wage, high-demand fields.
