Government Caps Gas and Butane Prices in Spain as Consumers Question €25 Bottles
The decree aims to shield more than 3.1 million households from a larger autumn increase as international gas prices continue to rise.
The Spanish Government announced measures to limit energy costs, capping the regulated household gas tariff increase at 15 per cent in the October review and holding the maximum price for a 12.5kg butane bottle at €19.55 until June 2027.
Without this Government intervention, price increases were expected to exceed more than 45 per cent as international gas prices continue to climb, prompting the new decree as Spanish households head into cooler months.
More than 3.1 million Spanish households are on the regulated TUR tariff, while around seven million people rely on bottled butane, particularly in areas without a natural gas network.
Reports suggest some consumers are paying around €25 for a 12.5kg bottle, despite the regulated cap of €19.55, prompting Ministry for the Ecological Transition clarification on pricing components.
Anyone paying more than the regulated maximum should verify the receipt and bottle size, as the Ministry notes the official price includes home supply costs for containers between 8kg and 20kg.
