Gov. Gianforte names Dr. Doug Harrington DPHHS director, replacing Charlie Brereton
Harrington, the state medical officer since 2023, will take over a department that managed a $300 million behavioral health initiative.
- On Tuesday, Governor Greg Gianforte announced that Department of Public Health and Human Services Director Charlie Brereton will resign October 30 for a private-sector role, with state medical officer Dr. Doug Harrington assuming the directorship.
- Brereton's resignation marks the third time this year an agency director has left for the private sector, following recent exits by leaders from the Department of Administration and Department of Transportation.
- During his four-year tenure, Brereton oversaw a $7 billion budget and roughly 3,000 employees while securing $233 million through the Rural Health Transformation Program to modernize rural health care delivery.
- Harrington, who brings more than 40 years of medical experience in clinical molecular biology and cardiac diagnostics, will assume the directorship in November.
- Montana Hospital Association CEO Ed Buttrey expressed confidence that the Rural Health Transformation Program will remain on track, stating that partners including the Governor's office and rural health providers remain committed to its success.
