Gov Abiodun Signs Education, Skills Trust Fund Bill Into Law
The law gives the Trust Fund stronger legal backing and an alternative financing source, while officials say more than 9,000 youths have been trained.
- On Friday, Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun signed the State Education and Skills Trust Fund Bill into law, creating a framework for sustainable funding and improved management of the state's education and vocational development sectors.
- Previously operating under an executive bill signed three years ago, the initiative now has stronger legal backing, formalizing the integration of informal education and traditional apprenticeship models into the state's system.
- Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu reported that over 9,000 youths have received vocational training to date, and the Trust Fund will support infrastructure, bursaries, and teacher development.
- The legislation makes education "more meaningful, more qualitative and more constructive," Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly Oludaisi Elemide said, adding that the bill followed extensive consultations with stakeholders.
- Arguing that government cannot fund education alone, Elemide urged greater private sector participation, noting that businesses should contribute because they "inherit these people" after they complete their education.
