Google’s AI unit DeepMind announces its first 'automated research lab' in the UK
The new lab will use AI and robotics for experiments in superconductors and semiconductors, giving British scientists priority access to advanced tools, the U.K. government said.
- Next year, DeepMind will open its first automated research lab in the U.K., expanding its large operational base founded by Demis Hassabis in 2010.
- Since January, the United Kingdom has accelerated deals to build AI infrastructure, with Microsoft, Nvidia, Google and OpenAI pledging over $40 billion in September after the national AI strategy.
- Using AI and robotics, the lab will run experiments autonomously, focusing on superconductor and semiconductor materials, while British scientists gain priority access to advanced AI tools, the government said.
- It could expand into joint research projects and public-sector AI deployments, with DeepMind possibly working on nuclear fusion and deploying Gemini models across government and education, the government said.
- Demis Hassabis said `AI has incredible potential to drive a new era of scientific discovery and improve everyday life`, and DeepMind said it is excited to deepen collaboration with the U.K. government to strengthen security and deliver tangible improvements for citizens.
