Google Begins Rolling Out Android’s Controversial New Sideloading Flow

Google is adding warnings and a one-day delay before users can install apps from unverified Android developers.

  • Google is rolling out an "advanced flow" for sideloading apps, introducing a new process for users installing software from unverified developers. This initial version is currently appearing on devices.
  • Designed to increase friction and protect users, the advanced flow aims to disrupt scams where bad actors coach victims into installing malicious apps through a deliberate, multi-step authentication process.
  • To sideload apps, users must enable "Allow apps from unverified developers" in Developer Options, authenticate, restart their phone, and wait 24 hours before installation can proceed. This process only needs completion once.
  • Enforcement begins September 30 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, covering apps from Google Play, Galaxy Store, and other major marketplaces. Google plans to expand verification requirements globally starting in 2027.
  • ADB remains exempt from these requirements, allowing power users to continue installing apps without delay. However, a recent poll showed 79% of respondents felt the rules hurt Android's openness or deemed the approach overkill.
