The Allahabad High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail pleas of two RPF personnel in connection with the custodial deaths in Gonda. Justice Manish Mathur of the Lucknow bench noted in the ruling that while the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided, the trend of custodial deaths remains unstoppable.
In the case of the alleged custodial death of Sanjay Kumar Sonkar in Gonda, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail plea of two RPF jawans accused of assaulting Sonkar in custody.
The prosecution alleges that Sanjay was assaulted while in custody, leading to his death. In their appeal, RPF Inspector Karan and Constable Amit denied the allegations.
Sanjay Sonkar died in custody of RPF on 4 November 2025 in Gonda. The Lucknow High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail plea of RPF Sub Inspector Karan Singh Yadav and Constable Amit Kumar Yadav.
