Gill wins toss as India bat first in second Test vs Sri Lanka, eyeing series win
Devdutt Padikkal finished unbeaten on 67 after a 120-run stand with Shubman Gill lifted India to 193-3.
On Sunday, August 23, 2026, India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first in the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.
India leads the two-match series 1-0 after defeating Sri Lanka by 165 runs in Galle, while Sri Lanka must win to level the series.
After openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul fell early, Shubman Gill and Devdutt Padikkal steadied the innings with a 120-run partnership; Asitha Fernando took two wickets.
India reached 193-3 by tea on day one, with Padikkal unbeaten on 67 from 122 balls and Gill scoring 50 before Fernando dismissed him in the 52nd over.
Both teams made lineup changes; India replaced Kuldeep Yadav with debutant Saransh Jain, while Sri Lanka introduced debutant Kamil Mishara and retained Pasindu Sooriyabandara after he replaced injured Dinesh Chandimal.
