Cam Skattebo Thought About Walking Away From Football After Ankle Injury
Skattebo said a major injury made him question football, but rehab and talks with family helped him return and prepare for a full Week 1 workload.
On Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo revealed on the Up & Adams podcast that he nearly retired following a major rookie season injury.
Suffering a dislocated right ankle, fractured fibula, and ruptured deltoid ligament during a Week 8 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the 25-year-old had vowed before entering the NFL to retire if a major injury occurred.
After a difficult first month of rehab, Skattebo admitted, "I would say probably a month in... I was like, Damn, do I really wanna do this?" before crediting teammates for his turnaround.
Giants head coach John Harbaugh praised Skattebo's work ethic during training camp, while the running back joins a committee backfield with veterans Devin Singletary and Najee Harris for 2026.
The New York Giants open their 2026 regular season at home against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, Sept. 13, with Skattebo fully cleared for action after his extensive rehabilitation.
