Germany's EnBW signs deal with Acwa for ammonia hydrogen ...

Germany plans to import 50-70% of its hydrogen needs via ammonia from Saudi Arabia, with a hydrogen cracker at Rostock set to operate by 2030.

  • During a German delegation visit, EnBW signed an MoU with Acwa to develop a pathway for importing and treating ammonia, involving VNG and the port of Rostock.
  • With domestic supply constrained, officials point to Germany expecting 50%-70% of hydrogen needs to be imported and Saudi Arabia's NEOM Green Hydrogen Project advancing substantially.
  • VNG will build a cracker in the Port of Rostock to extract hydrogen from imported ammonia and feed it into the German hydrogen core network.
  • With a 2030 start target, EnBW CEO Georg Stamatelopoulos said, `We are driving forward the establishment of a reliable import corridor for green ammonia from Saudi Arabia to Germany`.
  • If realised, the import corridor and Rostock processing capacity could secure routes and domestic processing to help meet Germany's hydrogen targets, using ammonia as a transport carrier.
