Two regional elections are held on Sunday 20 September in Germany, in Mecklenburg, but also in the capital, Berlin, where the left-wing party takes the lead in the polls. Die Linke's leader, Elif Eralp, of foreign origin, would write a double page of history if she were to conquer Berlin's town hall, because of its political colour and Turkish roots. Elif Eralp, a lawyer and daughter of Turkish political refugees, is running for Berlin's mayor as the head of the Left (Die Linke) party, in an election marked by the rise of the far-right AfD and rising housing costs. Her story, with its emphasis on the affordability of big cities and the participation of immigrants in politics, is drawing comparisons to New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani.
