Georgia dad, convicted after giving his son the gun used in school shooting, seeks new trial
Defense attorneys say the jury verdict was not supported by the evidence and was contrary to law.
On Wednesday, Colin Gray filed a motion for a new trial after his March conviction for second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the Sept. 4, 2024, Apalachee High School shooting.
A jury found Gray guilty in March of second-degree murder in the deaths of two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and involuntary manslaughter for teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie.
Prosecutors argued Gray provided his son, Colt Gray, the semiautomatic rifle as a Christmas gift, evidence supporting his 15-year prison sentence for the second-degree murder conviction.
Colt Gray was sentenced to life in prison without parole, while the school, located 45 miles northeast of Atlanta, remains the site of the tragedy.
As one of the few American parents criminally charged in such shootings, Gray's motion tests legal limits of parental responsibility under Georgia law.
