Google Maps Brings Gemini Navigation to Walking and Cycling
Gemini AI now supports walking and cycling navigation on iOS worldwide, with Android rolling out soon, enabling hands-free, conversational route assistance for safer travel.
- Starting today, Google is rolling Gemini into Maps for walking and cycling, live worldwide on iOS where Gemini is available, with Android support rolling out over the coming month.
- To reduce screen use while moving, Google designed Gemini in navigation to offer hands-free prompts and built the assistant inside the navigation view, triggered via the Gemini icon or `Hey Google` hotword.
- Gemini pulls map and POI data to answer context-aware questions while walking and accepts multi-step prompts like `Navigate home`, `Add stop`, and Android-only `Text Sarah I’m 10 minutes behind`.
- For walkers and cyclists, the change reduces screen use and aims to improve safety by enabling voice-only tasks, letting riders keep both hands on handlebars while managing schedules and messages.
- Having debuted for driving in November, Gemini now extends those capabilities to walking and cycling, highlighting Google’s push to integrate AI assistants into everyday mobility beyond chat apps.
