The Immigration and Naturalisation Service paid out approximately 99 million euros in penalty payments to asylum seekers in the first half of 2026. 46 asylum seekers received more than 80,000 euros as compensation for the slow processing of their asylum applications. In nine cases, the penalty payment even exceeded 100,000 euros.
The costs of penalty payments at the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) continue to rise at a rapid pace. In the first seven months of 2026, 99 million euros were already paid out because the agency failed to make decisions on applications on time. With this, the record amount for the entire year of 2025 has already been comfortably surpassed.
