Israeli Court Extends Detention of Two Gaza Flotilla Activists
The court granted a further six-day extension as lawyers said the two activists remain isolated and have not been charged.
On Tuesday, an Israeli court extended the detention of Global Sumud Flotilla activists Thiago Ávila and Saif Abukeshek until Sunday, May 10, despite no formal charges being filed against the pair.
Israeli forces intercepted the humanitarian flotilla on April 29 in international waters, abducting Ávila and Abukeshek while releasing approximately 175 other activists to Greek authorities.
According to the Adalah Center, both activists remain in total isolation with 24/7 high-intensity lighting and are on hunger strike, with allegations of physical abuse during interrogation.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has demanded the release of Abukeshek, calling him "unlawfully detained," while legal teams argue the arrests violate international law and Israel lacks jurisdiction.
The court's decision relied on "secret evidence" inaccessible to the defense, which the Adalah Center described as "judicial validation of the state's lawlessness," while lawyers noted the pair were abducted over 1,000 kilometres from Gaza.
