Gary Lydon: Irish Actor and Banshees of Inisherin Star Dies Aged 61
Tributes noted his final stage role in Of Mornington, where he performed with his son James, after a career spanning theatre, television and film.
Irish actor Gary Lydon died at age 61 on Sunday, May 3, 2026, after recently returning to the Wexford Arts Centre stage for his final performance.
Lydon achieved national prominence portraying counsellor Patrick Murray in The Clinic, earning two Best Supporting IFTAs in 2005 and 2006, before gaining acclaim in Love/Hate and The Banshees of Inisherin.
For more than 40 years, Lydon maintained a creative alliance with Wexford writer Billy Roche, beginning with the Wexford Trilogy in the mid-1980s. Mr. Roche called him "an iconic creature."
Recently, Lydon completed a "full circle moment" by starring in Roche's play Of Mornington at the Wexford Arts Centre alongside his son, James Doherty O'Brien.
The Wexford Arts Festival paid tribute to the "beloved" actor, noting discussions were underway to bring Of Mornington to the U.S. before his sudden passing.
