Gary fell ill on his 89th birthday but, not surprisingly, endured his weakened condition for weeks, allowing his loving family to relive good times and in the process, learn more about a life well-lived. One of his fondest memories was coaching "the 11 iron men", a team of 11- and 12-year-old boys, including future Detroit Red Wing players Nick Libett and Henry Monteith, to the 1958 National Peewee Hockey Grand Championship in Goderich, Ontario.…
