Miami-Dade Commissioner Says Proposed GTA VI Partnership Glorifies Violence Against Police, Pedestrians
County leaders say the game could draw visitors and revenue, while critics warn a public branding deal would send the wrong message.
On Friday, Miami-Dade officials confirmed preliminary discussions with Rockstar Games regarding a potential marketing partnership for "Grand Theft Auto VI," though officials emphasized nothing has been formally approved.
The Miamian reported that proposed concepts included transforming Miami International Airport into "Vice City Airport" and installing branded Metromover cars and signage throughout Downtown Miami and Brickell.
On Thursday, Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez and Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz publicly opposed the plan, questioning whether the county should "promote a fictional depiction of Miami centered on crime, violence, and lawlessness."
Sheriff Cordero-Stutz contended that "Grand Theft Auto" depicts conduct that deputies "work every single day to prevent," arguing government should not promote an identity centered on those same crimes.
While officials view the collaboration as a unique opportunity to generate revenue and showcase Miami-Dade to a massive audience, the debate highlights tensions between potential economic gains and concerns regarding mature themes.
