Gael Monfils, the last French 'Musketeer,' announces that he will retire at the end of 2026 season
Monfils, the oldest ATP Tour titleholder at 38, will end his 21-year career after playing final home tournaments, closing the era of the French Musketeers in tennis.
- On Wednesday, Gaël Monfils announced the year ahead will be his last as a professional tennis player, saying he is tremendously at peace with retiring after the 2026 tennis season.
- Monfils' long run during a golden age explains his prominence, as he reached a career-high ranking of No 6 while competing alongside Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray.
- He has won 13 ATP Tour titles, most recently at the Auckland Open in January, and Monfils wrote, `I held a racket in my hands for the first time at two and a half, and began playing professionally at 18.`
- Fans and peers reacted as Monfils thanked French and global fans and family, including Elena Svitolina, daughter, brother Daryl, sisters Roddie and Maïlie, and parents, for their support.
- Though he never won a major, Gaël Monfils said he has no regrets and does not expect a Grand Slam during next year, urging the new generation to enjoy their time on court.
