SUV Driver Dies After Crash that Killed Five Siblings From Elmira, Ont.
Ontario Provincial Police say the SUV driver died in hospital, while four adults and an infant in the van were also injured.
A funeral service for five siblings takes place today, Saturday, June 20, at 2 p.m. in Milverton, followed by interment at Morningview Gospel Cemetery for Peter Doerksen, Helena Doerksen, Sara Doerksen, Maggie Doerksen, and Susy Doerksen.
The crash occurred June 12 at the intersection of Wellington Road and Fourth Line in Mapleton Township, where a passenger van carrying 10 people collided with an SUV northwest of Guelph.
Ontario Provincial Police confirmed the 42-year-old driver of the SUV died in hospital on Tuesday; the driver was the lone occupant of the vehicle during the collision.
Parents Cornelius Doerksen Froese and Judit Doerksen sustained serious injuries; sister Nancy Doerksen stated in a crowdfunding appeal that their mother remains hospitalized with extensive trauma while their father recovers at home.
Prime Minister Mark Carney shared condolences on social media, offering sympathy to the bereaved family and the communities of Elmira and Mapleton as the tragedy reverberates across the country.
