Fulford's Pinch 2-Run Double in 8th Lifts Rockies Past Pirates 4-3, Freeland Reaches 1,000 Ks
Braxton Fulford’s pinch-hit double capped a Rockies rally, and Kyle Freeland became the second Colorado pitcher to reach 1,000 career strikeouts.
Pinch-Hitter Braxton Fulford hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the eighth inning Friday, lifting the Colorado Rockies to a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field before 33,596 fans.
Rockies starter Kyle Freeland reached 1,000 career strikeouts during his outing, becoming the second pitcher in franchise history to achieve the milestone, trailing only German Marquez with 1,069.
Rookie first baseman TJ Rumfield hit a 427-foot leadoff homer in the fourth, but the Pirates rallied in the eighth with an RBI double by Jared Triolo and a triple by Nick Gonzalez to briefly lead 3-2.
In the ninth, closer Antonio Senzatela escaped a bases-loaded, no-outs jam by striking out Tyler Callihan and inducing a game-ending double play from Jared Triolo to preserve the victory.
The three-game series continues Saturday as Pittsburgh Pirates RHP Paul Skenes faces Rockies RHP Tomoyuki Sugano in the middle game of the series.
