Fugitive in Italy arrested after hiding in nativity scene as fake statue

A 38-year-old fugitive was caught after hiding as a statue in Galatone's nativity scene to avoid a nine-month prison sentence, authorities said.

  • Facing a nine months and 15 days sentence, the 38-year-old man from Ghana had been sentenced for resisting a public official and aggravated assault and went missing after sentencing in Bologna court.
  • Attempting to disguise himself, he posed as a statue and reportedly used the fourth of the three wise men tactic by raising his arms and holding still, then resisted arrest and claimed the Nativity was his home, reports from local outlets describe.
  • The man was remanded in custody in Lecce to serve his sentence, and Flavio Filoni, Mayor of Galatone, thanked officers from Galatone and nearby Nardò for their work.
  • In a town of around 15,400 people in Puglia's Salento region, the odd tactic of posing as a nativity statue attracted coverage from Euronews, ITV News, and The Times.
