An Inside Look at Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles

The museum’s galleries feature Banksy, Peanuts and Star Wars artifacts across more than 30 exhibits in a 300,000-square-foot building.

  • The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a 13-acre campus in Exposition Park, opens to the public on September 22. Founder George Lucas and co-founder Mellody Hobson designed the facility as a space for "the people's art."
  • Designed by architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, the futuristic building has been a work in progress for about 17 years, Lucas said. Construction of the 300,000-square-foot facility began over eight years ago.
  • Featuring over 30 exhibits, the museum includes everything from Star Wars artifacts to Peanuts comic strips and works by Banksy. Senior curator Ryan Linkof described the museum as a place to explore "shared humanity" through art.
  • Announced Wednesday by CEO Tracey Bates, a new Banksy sculpture featuring two ornamental lions was recently added to the collection. The piece was installed just a few days ago outside the children's stories exhibit.
  • Personally curated by Lucas, the museum aims to be "by the people, for the people," Hobson said. The founders hope the unique building attracts visitors from eight-year-olds to 80-year-olds, depicting myths that "anchor us.
