From Black Boots to Pastel Suits, Italian Premier's Wardrobe Evolves with Her Politics
Fashion experts say Giorgia Meloni’s lighter suits help project authority and approachability as she broadens her appeal on the world stage.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has evolved from a combative outsider to a pragmatic leader, trading dark suits and black boots for elegant pastel tailoring to project authority and approachability on the global stage.
In 1996, at 19, Meloni was filmed wearing black while defending Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, comments that shadowed her career; she has since distanced herself from that extremism, adopting professional attire after her 2008 appointment as youth minister.
Fashion experts say her lighter palette conveys authority and warmth. Michela Bonafoni of Unicollege in Florence stated, "Lighter colors suggest a loyalty, tenderness and gentleness," while her Brothers of Italy party grew from 4% in 2018 to nearly 26% in 2022.
Other world leaders also use wardrobe to project political identity. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wears military-style clothing amid Russia's war, while Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum wears Indigenous-embroidered garments to honor textile traditions.
By the 2024 G7 summit in Puglia, Meloni had established herself as one of Europe's most politically secure leaders, increasingly comfortable on the international stage as she heads into the final year of her mandate facing new political challenges.
