Hundreds of Families Set to Benefit From Expanded Funded Childcare
The funding will add 3,300 places and £10m more for childcare settings as Plaid Cymru phases in its universal offer.
On Tuesday, the Welsh Government announced a £55 million investment to expand childcare, creating 3,300 new places for two-year-olds through the First Supplementary Budget.
Wrexham has joined Swansea, Merthyr Tydfil, and Newport in providing 12.5 hours of funded childcare weekly to all two-year-olds through the established Flying Start framework.
Deputy First Minister Sioned Williams stated on Tuesday, "This investment shows we are accelerating our commitments to the families of Wales," citing that childcare costs in Wales are the highest in the UK.
Welsh Labour's childcare spokesperson, Lynne Neagle, welcomed the expansion but added, "We await further information on the government's supplementary budget," raising questions about funding sustainability.
The government aims to deliver 20 hours of funded care weekly to children aged nine months to four years by May 2030, with a Childcare Expert Steering Group advising on the phased rollout.
