In the face of the heavy heat falling on often poorly isolated schools and the too few fans and air conditioning, communities and rectorate decided to close or adjust the schedules of many schools in the Centre-Val de Loire.
Europe is facing a new extreme heat wave, the second in less than a month. France has placed half of the country under red heat alert and shuts down hundreds of schools, while Belgium cancels trains, and several European states are taking measures to limit the effects of record temperatures.
While 845 schools and colleges will be closed on Monday, June 22, due to the high temperatures, most of the 60,000 schools remain open, at the cost of dispersal in order to try to mitigate the effects of heat.
Monday, 49 departments will be placed in red alert, and 40 others in orange alert. Minimum temperatures up to 26 °C are forecast by Météo-France for the night from Sunday to Monday.
