Four students die after entering water tank at Vrindavan residential school

  • Four students died and one was hospitalized in Vrindavan after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning an underground water tank at a Sanskrit Gurukulam in Chaitanya Vihar, Uttar Pradesh, officials reported on Wednesday.
  • One student entered the underground tank, around 12 feet deep, and collapsed from suspected toxic gas exposure. Four other students then entered in an attempt to rescue him, causing all five to lose consciousness.
  • The Sanskrit Gurukulam is run by Ashish Kumar Sharma, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, and houses around 100 students on campus. SSP Shlok Kumar confirmed the four deceased victims were aged between 17 and 20 years.
  • District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh ordered a magisterial inquiry into safety and regulatory compliance at the facility. The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure proper treatment for the surviving student, Rudra, who remains hospitalized.
  • "Other gurukulams in the area would be audited again, and the buildings would be checked to prevent recurrence of such incidents," Singh said. The SSP will also examine CCTV footage from the site.
