Man Who Owned "Home Alone" House at Time of Filming Found Dead Days After Child Porn Charges Filed
The 79-year-old was found in a Lake Forest preserve after facing felony child sexual abuse material charges, and an autopsy is scheduled Thursday.
- On Wednesday, Lake Forest resident John Abendshein, 79, was found dead at the Derwen Mawr Nature Preserve. The Lake County Coroner identified the body Thursday morning, launching a death investigation.
- Police arrested Abendshein on April 16, charging him with 7 felony counts of possession of child sexual abuse material after the Lake Forest Police Department discovered an illicit Google Drive account. Multiple cyber tips prompted the search warrant.
- During a detention hearing on Friday, a judge denied the petition to detain Abendshein, releasing him with conditions. Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Colleen McConnel presented evidence including photos of children between the ages of 4 and 15.
- Abendshein previously owned the iconic 671 Lincoln Avenue home in Winnetka featured in the 1990 movie 'Home Alone.' He lived at the property during filming and later wrote a memoir about the experience.
- The Lake County Coroner's Office is investigating the cause of death, with an autopsy scheduled for Thursday. Officials believe this was an isolated incident with no further threat to the community.
