Zambia Ex-Minister Killed in Raid on Opposition Chief’s Home
Police said 11 people were arrested and a firearm was recovered as authorities investigated a suspected militia linked to post-election tensions.
- On Wednesday, Zambian Ex-Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya was killed during a security operation at the home of opposition leader Brian Mundubile, following an exchange of gunfire between security forces and unidentified individuals.
- President Hakainde Hichilema won a second term with about 60 percent of the vote, while Mundubile finished second with around 38 percent and identified "serious irregularities" in the election.
- Government officials claimed the raid targeted a suspected militia that posed "a serious threat to State security." Authorities arrested 11 individuals during the operation, though Mundubile rejected allegations his alliance was involved in militia activity.
- Following the raid, Mundubile went into hiding while the death of Kafwaya drew international scrutiny. UN human rights chief Volker Turk called on authorities to stop arbitrary arrests and respect due process rights of detainees.
- International observers have raised concerns about the election's conduct, citing opposition allegations of intimidation, arrests, abductions, and violence. The incident adds to tensions following the vote, with questions remaining over Kafwaya's death and the status of those arrested.
