Former Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden cheered as she wins Authors Guild honor
Hayden said libraries connect readers to ideas and free expression as the Authors Guild honored her, Percival Everett and Amy Tan.
On Monday, Carla Hayden received a Champion of Writers Award from the Authors Guild at a gala in New York, praising libraries as "engines of accessibility and inclusion."
Nearly a year after President Donald Trump fired her as Librarian of Congress, Hayden appeared before the literary community, offering an implicit rebuttal to his attacks against what he calls "Woke" culture.
Percival Everett and Amy Tan were also honored, with Tan cited for Distinguished Service to the Literary Community and describing her own work as "political."
The gala served as a forum for opposing book bans, with speakers emphasizing that libraries are where "storytelling meets opportunity" and remain vital havens for free expression.
Authors also denounced AI programs using their work without permission, a subject of ongoing lawsuits against Microsoft and OpenAI, while the Baldacci Award for Literary Activism was presented to Everett.
