Foreign National Indicted on Terrorism Charges in New York
Prosecutors say he ran a Brooklyn network that raised money and travel funds for at least three people linked to ISIS and Al-Nusrah Front.
- Davud Ansariy, a 41-year-old Uzbek national, was extradited to the Eastern District of New York on September 23 from Tbilisi, Georgia, and arraigned Thursday on charges of providing material support to ISIS and the Al-Nusrah Front.
- Prosecutors allege Ansariy led a Brooklyn-based group called "chayxona," or "tea house," that raised money to support families of ISIS and Al-Nusrah Front fighters and funded travel for at least three individuals killed fighting in Syria.
- Five days after a co-conspirator's arrest in May 2016, Ansariy fled to Turkey on a one-way ticket, remaining a fugitive for more than 10 years until his capture in August.
- If convicted, Ansariy faces up to 35 years in prison; Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Eisenberg stated he must "answer to the charge that he supported two of the most ruthless terrorist groups in the world, ISIS and the Al-Nusrah Front."
- His arrest marks the latest in several federal prosecutions for material support to terrorism across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Kansas, Washington, Texas, and California, as the U.S. war on terror has cost Americans nearly $10 trillion and more than 45,000 service members' lives.
