Buying Days in South Africa: Zimbabwean Man Arrested for Possession of 582 Passports Laced with Money
Authorities seized 582 passports and R147,300 cash from a Zimbabwean suspect believed to be involved in a large immigration and fraud scheme, police said.
- On Monday, Mpumalanga police arrested a 43-year-old Zimbabwean national after finding 582 passports and about R147 300 in cash during a vehicle search in the Emgwenya/Waterval Boven area.
- Investigators believe the passports were meant to be fraudulently stamped at a border gate, and police say the recovered cash was likely payment for these services.
- A multidisciplinary police team intercepted and searched a white Chevrolet Utility bakkie with Gauteng registration plates, finding passports from Malawian, Zimbabwean and Mozambican nationals and about R20 000 in a black plastic bag.
- The suspect faces charges including contravening the Immigration Act, fraud and money laundering and is expected to appear at the Waterval Boven Periodical Court on Wednesday.
