Ford Ramps up Technology in Its Popular F-150 Pickup to Combat Car Thieves
Ford's Start Inhibit and smartphone alerts help reduce F-150 thefts, with a 23% national drop in vehicle thefts during early 2025, officials said.
- In Detroit, Ford Motor Co. stepped up technology in its F-150 pickups to counter evolving car-theft techniques.
- Because F-150s are ubiquitous and high-value, thieves target them by stealing key fobs, reprogramming computers, altering VINs, and taking valuable cargo, Ford Secure general manager Christian Moran said.
- Once owners notice a theft, they should call police and then Ford call center, which confirms the report and coordinates `Start Inhibit` to shut the engine and locate the truck.
- NHTSA reported more than 850,000 U.S. vehicle thefts in 2024 with $8 billion in losses, while Ford's security package is included for one year and costs $7.99 per month thereafter.
- That was expanded in the 2025 model year to include the F-250 Super Duty pickup, and Ford plans to extend it to other vehicles in 2026, as part of the ongoing cat-and-mouse with thieves.
