China Launches Massive Aerial Drone Carrier in Show of Prowess
The Jiu Tian drone carrier can carry 6 tons and 100 loitering munitions, enhancing China's long-range unmanned capabilities for ISR and electronic warfare, state media reported.
- On Thursday, Xinhua News Agency reported the unmanned Jiutian completed its first mission in Shaanxi province, marking its maiden flight without specifying timing.
- Named Jiutian, which means `nine heavens`, the craft debuted at Zhuhai last year and was designed by the First Aircraft Institute, Aviation Industry Corporation of China.
- The Jiutian can carry up to 100 loitering munitions or small drones, including kamikaze drones, and supports a 6-ton payload on eight hardpoints for bombs and missiles.
- Observers likened the Jiutian to an aircraft carrier for hosting drones and missiles, while Song Zhongping said it confirms a `drone carrier` role enabling `swarm attacks` that defences would be `unable to defend against`.
- The maiden flight positions Jiutian as a step forward in China's large-drone technology and swarm capabilities, with ISR and electronic warfare roles expanding PLA mission sets and deployment from both sides of the fuselage extending operational reach.
